چکیده

This article describes two probability sampling approaches to sampling water resources. In the rst approach, a complete enumeration of eligible sample units (e.g. stream segments, water bodies, drainage basins) is performed using GIS or paper maps to create a list frame. A probability random sample is then selected from this frame. In the second approach, a two-stage sample is selected. In the rst stage, area segments are selected using a probability design, such as stratiied sampling. Water resources contained in each segment are enumerated and labeled using eld visits or aerial photographs. In a second stage, the water resource or related sampling units (e.g. stream segments, water bodies, measurement points) are selected in each of the segments. Examples of both approaches are presented, and their relative strengths and weaknesses are discussed.

In a split sample design, we examine the impact of federal funding availability on Willingness to Pay (WTP) for watershed management program attributes and tradeoffs in a choice experiment. We also evaluate how presenting respondents with different sets of choice attributes, in alternative survey designs, affects the estimation of preference functions. We also compared preferences for watershed...

Multi-Objective Optimization of Low Impact Development Designs in an Urbanizing Watershed

Multi-objective optimization linked with an urban stormwater model is used in this study to identify cost-effective low impact development (LID) implementation designs for small urbanizing watersheds. The epsilon-Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (ε-NSGAII) has been coupled with the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Stormwater Management Model (SWMM) to balance the costs and the hyd...

Septic systems as potential pollution sources in the Cannonsville Reservoir Watershed, New York.

On-site septic systems require appropriate soil characteristics to provide effective wastewater treatment. The objective of this study was to evaluate siting practices and treatment efficacy of on-site septic systems within the Cannonsville Reservoir watershed (115900 ha) in the state of New York. Using digital soil survey data, a database of on-site conditions was developed from more than 1100...

Taming a Flood with a T-CUP - Designing Flood-Control Structures with a Genetic Algorithm

This paper describes the use of a genetic algorithm to solve a hydrology design problem determining an optimal prescription of Best Management Practices in a flood-prone watershed. The result is an interactive tool for hydrology engineers that can be used to explore the effects of water retention and infiltration devices as an alternative to traditional storm sewers. The model has proved capabl...
